Tonbridge v New Ash Green

East Kent Feeder League - 46 Overs per side

Tonbridge (17 pts) 267-9 (46 overs)
New Ash Green (5 pts) 178-4 (46 overs)
New Ash Green lost by 89 runs

Having beaten Tonbridge earlier in the season with a severely depleted bowling attack New Ash Green should have fancied their chances with a slightly stronger, albeit not full strength, attack, but Tonbridge's batsmen performed rather better this time round than in the first match. Mick Sumner produced probably his best spell of bowling of the season, both in an initial 8 over burst and in returning at the end and thoroughly deserved his first 5 wicket haul of the season. His two consecutive balls (spread over two overs) to remove the openers were magnificent inswingers, and the hat trick ball was as good and only just kept out by John Simmons, who enjoyed his second good innings of the season against New Ash Green. The rest of the New Ash Green attack was less consistent, though most produced some good overs, particularly Lee Saunders on his first appearance in the first team this year. However Dilsahn Fernando and Nadeem Shehzad, in contrasting styles, kept Simmons company with 50 each, and it was only at the end that the bowlers began to make progress as the batsmen looked to accelerate. Sumner had a second chance at a hat trick, also well bowled and well played by the batsman, and Paul Sumner picked up a couple of wickets as Tonbridge finished on 267-9.

It was a tough target yet again, even on a good batting track and with a fast outfield, and with neither opening batsman in the best of health (quite apart from being well past their peaks age wise) New Ash Green struggled early on against the bouncing ball. Quantrill was dropped twice and managed to deflect a leg side ball onto his stumps with his foot only to have the bail fall back into its slot, and all this before he had made 5. Pickering was also dropped once, but once they had weathered the initial storm both looked solid enough without ever looking remotely like they were going to score quickly enough to get the runs. The advent of spin in the form of Khurram Shehzad saw the break through with Pickering bowled and Phil Wallis getting a horrible ball first up, Shehzad's lightning fast quicker ball firing through his defence and bowling him. Ian Davies survived the third hat trick ball of the match, and he and Quantrill slowly started to up the scoring rate. With wickets not coming quickly and the game safe Tonbridge began to experiment with their bowling in the hope of buying some bonus points, and Davies hit the first six of the match before the return of the opening bowler, Smiles, beat him as he fended one up and was well caught in the follow through. Smiles did for Quantrill as well when he hit a half volley straight to the only fielder further away than the bowler, but with Matt Clark looking solid Tonbridge opened up the game again and Clark and Mick Sumner took advantage by knocking up a quick 54 together and with a single off the last ball managed to bring up one bonus point for New Ash Green.

New Ash Green II v Holborough Anchorians II

East Kent Feeder League - 46 Overs per side

Holborough (20 pts) 187-8 (46 overs)
New Ash Green (4 pts) 61 all out (43.5 overs)
New Ash Green lost by 126 runs

The second team, also depleted, put up a strong performance in the field, with John Harley taking 3-33 and Graeme Poole bowling a tidy opening spell as they reduced Holborough to 51-5. Holborough recovered somewhat from there, but none of the bowlers disgraced themselves, and Adam Reeves followed up last week's maiden 5 wicket haul with 3 more as Holborough were restricted to 187-8.

New Ash Green had a disastrous start to their batting, with the top 3 all dismissed for ducks. From there on they found run scoring very hard work. Matt Bushe held the innings together after coming in in the third over, staying unbeaten to the end on 25, but no one else could make double figures. They nearly managed to take the match the distance, but in the end John Harley fell with 13 balls remaining.

New Ash Green v New Ifield

Friendly

New Ifield 148 all out (38.1overs)
New Ash Green 142 all out (40.1 overs)
New Ash Green lost by 6 runs

With New Ifield's prolonged struggle with internal politics leaving them with an 8 man side New Ash Green lent them 3 Ryans and the game got under way with New Ifield batting first. As on Saturday John Harley took 3 wickets, while Dan Lewsey bowled tidily but picked up just the 1. Ben Cooke took a wicket and Matt Lemon bowled a very tidy spell to take 2-10, and John Howland finished off the innings with figures of 2-2, both wides, one of his wickets a collectors' item – a slip catch by Phil Markham.

The run chase started soundly with Ben Cooke and Phil Boobbyer getting away solidly, until Boobyer perished after hitting a six and Cooke followed quickly. Phil Wallis finally opened his New Ash Green account and went on to play a solid innings, supported initially by John Howland, and later by Dave Harley. A little bit of a collapse looked as if it had put New Ifield back in the game, but with only 4 an over needed and Matt Bushe and Dan Lewsey still to accompany Wallis they should have been secure. A disastrous over from James Blackwell put paid to those thoughts, though, with both Wallis and Bushe misjudging the slow pace and prodding the ball back to the bowler, Wallis for a well made 48. Dan Lewsey wasn't giving up, though, and three well hit boundaries kept the game alive, with John Harley keeping the crowd on tenterhooks with his survival at the other end. Lewsey couldn't ger Blackwell away enough in his lat over, though, and he left Harley to face the last over with 7 needed to win. With his team hoping he could push a single Harley swung at the first ball and promptly increased his lead in the Duck Cup, leaving New Ifield the winners by 6 runs in a very good game.
