New Ifield v New Ash Green

Friendly Match - "Proper Cricket"

New Ifield 190 all out (37.4 overs)
New Ash Green 137-6 (45 overs)
Match Drawn

With the square at Manor Field not yet ready for use New Ifield generously managed to prepare a pitch and host the game instead. Having agreed a friendly time game and agreed that New Ifield would bat first, New Ash Green were struck again by the curse of finger injuries that is plaguing them this season when Dan Lewsey dislocated a finger as he warmed up. Thus having lost possibly their best bowler in the conditions and having to field throughout with 10 men New Ash Green were struggling from the start. However the early season conditions were certainly helpful to the bowlers, and a much improved fielding display also helped to keep New Ash Green in the game. John Harley started with a tidy spell and made the first breakthroughs via a good slip catch from Ian Martin and another by Matt Bushe in the gully. David Baker struggled with some winter rustiness though he swung a few in dangerously and was unlucky to have a difficult chance put down. At first change, though, Joe Elisak bowled an excellent spell, taking a first wicket with one that turned and bounced then having the fast scoring Rob McSweeney well caught on the boundary by young Matt Clark, only for him to have to step over the boundary in taking the catch. The very next ball found McSweeney's edge though, and a third wicket, again well caught by a young debutant in Martin Fry, soon followed. Kieran Poole, having struggled last week with a lack of confidence in his healing leg also bowled much more consistently this week, and picked up a deserved wicket in a very tidy spell. Some late order hitting kept the run rate up despite a decent spell and a wicket for Ian Martin, but Simon Freeman recovered from some early punishment to take two wickets in successive balls, both bowled, and although he couldn't get the hat trick he took a third an over later to wrap up the innings 15 minutes before tea was due.

For all the signs of progress, though, there had still been far too many full tosses and long hops, and 190 was a huge score in the conditions. Just how difficult it was to score when the bowlers kept the ball consistently close to a good line and length became evident in the very slow start to the New Ash Green response. There were, though, again impresisve performances from the debutants Martin Fry and Matt Clark, who both stayed in and scored a few runs when the chance came. However despite having plenty of time to chase the total New Ash Green never looked like getting anywahere near it. Ian Martin did his best, managing to score runs off good balls more effectively than any other batsman in the match on his way to 67 not out. Dan lewsey returned form hospital to brave the pain in his relocated but badly swollen finger and Joe Elisak helped Martin add an unbeaten 49 for the 7th wicket. Without ever really playing for the draw New Ash Green achieved it fairly solidly, but at least most players on both teams got plenty of practice in.

Addingtonv New Ash Green

Friendly Match - 40 Overs per side

Addington 223-8 (40 overs)
New Ash Green 103 all out (36 overs)
New Ash Green lost by 120 runs

Full details of this game welcomed from anyone who was there, but from the scorecard New Ash Green seem to have got off to a promising start with Kieron Poole taking two early wickets and John Harley having a tidy spell. Addington's middle order then piled on the runs, but there was a good debut performance from Adam Reeves with the ball, taking 1-16 in six overs to be the team's most economical bowler, and also holding two catches. Addington still managed 223, a big score at this stage of the season.

In response New Ash Green failed to mount much of a challenge. John Harding made some runs but was run out. Matt Scanlan top scored with 37, which is at least a solid start to the season, and Adam Reeves continued his good game with 14, but no one else made double figures. However at least 100 was reached and the innings was prolonged until just four overs from the end.
