Friendly Match
Yalding 222-8 (51.1 overs)
New Ash Green 185 all out (36.4 overs)
New Ash Green lost by 37 runs
The fixture against Yalding found both sides rather weaker than in the previous Saturday fixture between the sides, but Yalding had a few more of their first choice players than New Ash Green. Plenty of bowlers had a go, and none were taken apart, though none dominated either, Matt Bushe with 2-21 in 6 overs opening the bowling, Lee Saunders with 1-15 in 7 overs and David Baker with 2-30 in 7.1 probably being the pick of the bunch. They reduced Yalding to 57-5, but Tony Shepherd, batting at number 7, played faultlessly in making a century. With the game being a 'tea between' match, and half an hour longer than usual, he had the luxury of being able to bat on into the 52nd over before declaring on reaching his century with the score on 222-8.
The extended length of the game meant there was still time for New Ash Green,. Though in the end they would only have faced a maximum of 43 overs. Yalding did spread their bowling around, using ten bowlers with none bowling more than 5 overs. Joe Elisak took advantage of this to make his second fifty of the season (and of his career), but a few lusty blows from Martin Fry excepted the rest of the top and middle order crumbled rather disappointingly, perhaps feeling slighted by going in after the rather unusual choice of opening batsman, John Harley. David Baker and Dan Lewsey made a useful number 8 and 9, but neither capitalised on making a start, and at 139-9 with 14 overs remaining it looked all over. Lee Saunders and matt Bushe were a useful last wicket pair, though, and were determined to have a go at chasing down the total. They added 46 for the last wicket, at a rate quick enough to keep victory in sight, and even the advent of Shepherd (a first team regular bowler) couldn't slow them down. Having got more than half way to their target, though, and with more than six overs remaining, Bushe found a fielder to bring a valiant effort to an end.

Friendly Match - 40 overs per side
New Ash Green 151 all out (39.4overs)
Horsmonden 151 all out (34 overs)
Match Tied
Another fixture cock up on Sunday saw a game against a hastily formed Horsmonden second eleven – not as much of an easy game as it sounds as they do usually play two games most Sundays but had managed to arrange two by mistake this week, thinking they only had the one 'first team' game. Fortunately their second eleven was just the right strength for New Ash Green, and it turned out to be an excellent game. Very short of bowling Horsmonden got off to a good start when John Howland and Matthew Quantrill both fell cheaply. David Baker played a typically aggressive innings in making 28, and the rest of the innings revolved around John Harding, who played soundly on the never easy wicket before becoming more aggressive towards the end. He was given good support by James Porter, who made only 4 of their partnership of 60, but undoubtedly played the longest innings of his career. John Harley hit a six at the end and the last wicket fell in the 40th over for 151.
Had Horsmonden's batting been as ordinary as their bowling 151 would have been more than enough, but they turned out to have several players who were more than capable with the bat. After an early strike from John Harley they seemed to be cruising, picking runs off at will against Harley and Lewsey as 60 were added for the second wicket. The first bowling change brought a dramatic change in the game though, with Simon Freeman starting with a wicket maiden and following it up with a double wicket maiden. However the number 3, Mark Davies, was still batting steadily, and he was joined at number 6 by Glen Christian who launched a barrage of shots at Freeman, soon spreading the fielders to the boundaries. Davies reached fifty before mis-hitting one from Matt Bushe, and being well caught by Matthew Quantrill diving forward to take a catch he spotted late out of the sun. Bushe picked up two more wickets, and also took a critical catch when Christian sliced another attempted heave at Freeman and was caught at fly slip, a position Bushe had just moved to. New Ash Green looked on top again, with just one experienced batsman left, and a few youngsters, but that batsman played soundly, and with the youngsters batting soundly it looked as if Horsmonden would manage the win. He hit a four to bring victory within 3 runs, but looking to attack the next ball was superbly beaten by Freeman spearing the ball down the leg side and John Harding taking a superb stumping, completing Freeman's first ever five wicket haul. With three needed to win the two youngest players in the game, the number 11 being only about 12. The next over saw just single, then the 'senior' partner managed to edge a single from the first ball of Freeman's next over to bring the scores level. His junior partner couldn't score off the next five balls, and the older batsman couldn't manage anything from the next over, seemingly not trusting his partner to face another over he called for a suicidal run from the last ball. Dan Lewsey kept his cool to lob the ball into John Harding and complete the run out by some distance and tie the game, probably a fair result in the end.
