New Ash Green v Old Wilsonians
Saturday 24th June 2006

Kent League Match - 100 Overs

Old Wilsonians (20 points) 184-9 dec. (50 overs)
New Ash Green (4 points) 88 all out (28.4 overs)
New Ash Green lost by 96 runs.

Once again struggling to have enough regular first XI squad members available New Ash Green struggled against bottom of the table Old Wilsonians. Andy Cox bowled well picking up three wickets and Mick Sumner and Matt Scanlan took 2 each, Scanlan bowling 12 overs reasonably cheaply with his spin, hopefully another good sign for the future. Old Wilsonians finally made 184-9 in their 50 overs.

In reply sadly it was a step backwards for New Ash Green with only Andy Cox making a significant score, getting 40. Marc Klus made 13, and perhaps the most promising performance was the only other double figure score, 12 by Scott McKechnie. No one else made much of a contribution though, and the innings subsided to 88 all out, a disappointing total after some more resolute scoring last week.

Bobbing Court II v New Ash Green II
Saturday 24th June 2006

Mid-Kent League Match - 92 Overs

New Ash Green (13 points) 128 all out (44.4 overs)
Bobbing Court (20 points) 132-9 (36.2 overs)
New Ash Green lost by 1 wicket.

A rematch with the side they had beaten two weeks previously offered New Ash Green 2nds the promise of another competitive match, and that it certainly was, though between them the two sides only had 8 survivors from 2 weeks previously. The two captains were the same, though, and with neither side having an umpire they had a toss, won by Bobbing, who chose to bowl first. The wicket was hard with some tuft grass giving a bit of uneven bounce, and when Trevor Earl opened the bowling at considerable pace New Ash Green were under some pressure. With Les Earl bowling tidily at the other end the scoring rate was slow, but Matthew Quantrill and John Howland grafted well before Howland missed one from Les Earl. Alan Carter also played soundly until he got off the mark, when he lost his head and took a risky second only to be beaten by a direct hit. David Baker kept Quantrill company for a while and made 16 before giving Trevor Earl is only wicket when a very well struck off drive was astoundingly plucked out of the air by Mick Stevens, the same fielder who had run out Carter. Matt Bushe then did a heroic job fending off the pace and bounce of Trevor Earl until he had finished his 12 overs with figures of 1-33, far less effective than had seemed likely early on. In the meantime Quantrill had been taking runs off the change bowling at the other end and the run rate began to climb. Just as the foundation seemed set for a big score, though, Bushe mishit one to cover, and soon afterwards Quantrill pulled one hard to square leg where the fielder clung on on the rebound, ending his innings at 53. Lee Saunders and Dan Lewsey both made double figures, but the innings tailed away somewhat to end disappointingly on 128.

Graeme Poole and Lee Saunders both took advantage of the conditions in testing opening spells. Saunders was very economical, eventually going for just 9 runs in 6 overs, but the first breakthrough came from a run out whne Matt Bushe’s long throw from the boundary was relayed to the bowlers end by Matthew Quantrill, a direct hit running out the dangerous looking O’Kane. Graeme Poole then added to his wicket tally for the season with one that lifted and took the edge, and picked up a second when Mick Stevens luck for the day finally ran out and he lobbed one tamely to point. Unfortunately this was the start of a nightmare over for Poole, who struggled with the crumbling footholds and then lost his run up and rhythm completely, conceding 18 runs amid a welter of no balls. Keith Bushell got New Ash Green back in the game with a wicket almost immediately and then proceeded to run through the rest of the Bobbing line up, taking 6-27 in his 12 overs. All the Bobbing batsmen played positively, Trevor Earl in particular looking as if he would take the game away from New ash Green, hitting a huge six before being bowled taking a huge swipe at a Bushell slower ball. The game was always in the balance, and when Bushell took the 9th wicket with 21 still needed it looked to be tipped firmly New Ash Green’s way. However the number 11 was actually an opening batsman, having pulled a hamstring earlier he now came in with a runner and proceeded to hold his end steadily while at the other Neville Sears mixed sound defence with the occasional mighty whack over mid wicket, the last of which brought Bobbing a one wicket win. A sad end for New Ash Green, but an excellent game played in excellent spirit, with no controversy despite the batting teams providing all the umpires.

New Ash Green v Chelsfield Exiles
Sunday 25th June 2006

Sadly World Cup Fever conquered all – Chelsfield had to pull out with only 4 players available, and the fixture bureau did not produce any opposition.
