Walmer v New Ash Green
Saturday 22nd July 2006

Kent League Match - 100 Overs

New Ash Green (1 point) 66 all out (41.5 overs)
Walmer (16 points) 68-3 (10.1 overs)
New Ash Green lost by 7 wickets.

A severely weakened New Ash Green side, even by this season’s standards, made the long journey to Walmer knowing they were in for a hard match. For some mysterious reason Walmer chose to insert New Ash Green, and with only 4 first team regulars New Ash Green fought a long hard rearguard battle. Vic Mayers opened the batting and made 29, but no one else could make double figures. Everyone battled hard, though, and New Ash Green did manage to stretch their innings past 40 overs even if runs were hard to come by. They also managed to take 14 runs from the only over bowled by Walmer’s first change bowler, hitting him out of the attack – a triumph of some sort!

Walmer knocked off the required runs in no time, although Vic Mayers once again caused them problems, taking 3-13 in 5 overs. At the other end, though, James Hewitt and Mick Sumner both suffered something of a mauling and Walmer won comfortably from the first ball of the 11th over.

New Ash Green II v The Mote IV
Saturday 22nd July 2006

Mid-Kent League Match - 92 Overs

New Ash Green (9 points) 141-7 (46 overs)
The Mote (18 points) 142-6 (41.1 overs)
New Ash Green lost by 4 wickets.

New Ash Green have had the misfortune this season to have had the first match with their weakest opponents rained off when at full strength and the return game on a day when they were seriously struggling to raise a side. Thanks to a number of volunteers making themselves available a side was raised and a decent effort made in the match. Having been put in Matt Dehaney and John Howland made an excellent start, with Dehaney finally fulfilling the promise he has been showing with the bat. He made 46 in an opening stand of 81, but unfortunately once he was out the remainder of the batting line up really struggled to score quickly. John howland made 22 and Martin Pickering, on his debut, and Dan Lewsey each made contributions, but New Ash Green could really have done with the late arriving Scott McKechnie being there in time to bat, or some of the more aggressive batsmen who had been promoted to the 1st team. A total of 141 was an improvement on much of the season, particularly in Matthew Quantrill’s absence, but after the start they had had it could have been better, and a few more would have made them strong favourites to win.

New Ash Green did have as strong a bowling side as they have put out all season, and John Harley and Matt Dehaney made good progress against a Mote top order which has been reinforced in recent weeks. Harley took 3-44 in his 12 overs, and Dehaney 1-33 as well as two catches. They were also assisted by Stuart Clarke taking a catch and making a run out. Keith Bushell was economical (17 runs in 9 overs) but couldn’t make the breakthrough, and in the end the Mote got home with a few overs to spare, but this was an excellent effort from a depleted team, and it says something for their attitude that afterwards they seem to have been more disappointed at the loss than pleased by the performance.

New Ash Green v Lordswood
Sunday 23rd July 2006

Medway Sunday League Match - 40 Overs per side

Lordswood 216-8 (40 overs)
New Ash Green 82 all out (21.4
overs)
New Ash Green lost by 134 runs.

The Sunday side also made a decent effort against strong opposition, restricting Lordswood to 216-8 with 8 different bowlers having a go. David Harley picked up 3-45 in 5 overs at the end, and John Harley and Dan Lewsey were probably the most economic with 1-34 and 1-32 respectively in 8 overs. Scott McKechnie enjoyed himself behind the stumps with 2 catches and 2 stumpings.

In reply only Luke Shaw with 11 and Dan Lewsey with 17 could make double figures, but there were a number of small contributions down the order and the total of 82 was an improvement on some of the batting collapses of earlier in the season.
