June 2006
Bexleyheath v New Ash Green
Saturday 17th June 2006
Kent League
Match - 100 Overs
Bexleyheath
(20 points) 223-7 dec. (47 overs)
New Ash Green (6 points) 179 all out (38.1 overs)
New Ash Green lost by 46 runs.
Another poor weekend for availability saw a weakened first team
struggle even more when traffic delays meant they had to start the game with
only 8 players. Having lost the toss (I assume – if not then it was a bold
choice to field first!) Andy Stuart and Mick Sumner had to bowl long spells
waiting for the remaining players to arrive and be eligible to bowl. They
managed one early success, and Pete Burke and Vic Mayers
did each pick up a wicket when they arrived. Short of normal bowlers Matt Scanlan was given a go with his spin, and perhaps boosted
by his improved batting produced a very creditable spell, taking 1-22 in 9 overs. Micky Sumner returned to
take late wickets and finish with 4-65, but Bexleyheath were confident enough
to declare early on 223-7.
Stripped of most of their star batsmen and losing Scanlan in the first over New Ash Green might have been
expected to collapse, but in fact this was a very encouraging display. Dan
Walton put in another solid innings, making 35, although it may have been
costly as he fractured a finger and is now likely to be out for some weeks. Star
of the show, though, was Andy Mayers, who made a
fairly rapid 51 and was only out when playing perhaps overly aggressively because
he had to leave early. There were other contributions as well and New Ash Green
recovered from last weeks abysmal display to record their highest total of the
season and claim 3 batting points. The encouraging sign is that there are now a
number of batsmen who are starting to make decent contributions on a regular
basis, and it would appear that New Ash Green’s only problem now is lack of
depth in the squad and lack of regular availability from those who are of
sufficient quality. There is no doubt that a regular 1st XI of full
strength would be more than competitive at this level.

New Ash Green II v Betteshanger
CW II
Saturday 17th June 2006
Mid-Kent
League Match - 92 Overs
New Ash Green
Conceded
For some reason mid-June seems to be a bad time for New Ash
Green. The number of different reasons for being unavailable was quite
dizzying, and as those unavailable continued to mount through Wednesday and
Thursday reality began to dawn that New Ash Green would probably have only 7 or
8 players in the 2nd XI if the first team had a full side, and of
those at least two would not be fully fit. And this to take
on the only unbeaten side in the league. Sadly the inevitable had to be
bowed to, and the match was called off on Friday afternoon. Let’s hope it’s a one
off.

Sherwood v New Ash Green
Sunday 18th June 2006
Medway Sunday League
Match - 40 Overs per side
Sherwood (8 points) 230-9
(40 overs)
New Ash Green (4 points) 106 all out (32.1 overs)
New Ash Green lost by 124 runs.
The game against Sherwood seems to have been
played in rather better spirit than last years, and although Sherwood were once again well on top there were some promising
performances from New Ash Green. A bowling attack made up primarily of junior
bowlers all performed solidly enough and picked up wickets, Lee Saunders and Kieron Poole picking up 3 wickets each and Luke Shaw maintaining
an economy rate that is frankly astonishing for a 13 year old playing men’s cricket.
There were several contributions with the bat, with John Harding making 13 on
his playing comeback, Scott McKechnie top scoring
with 28 and Saunders and David Baker both making double figures. Its been a steep learning curve for many of the young
players, but they are responding well and there are still grounds to hope for a
big improvement over the next few years.
