Old Brockleians v New
Ash Green
Saturday 5th August 2006
Kent League
Match - 100 Overs
Old Brockleians (20 points) 210-7 (50 overs)
New Ash Green (4 points) 132 all out (37.1 overs)
New Ash Green lost by 78 runs.
The week after tour brought the usual chaos in selection and
preparation, but a not too weak New Ash Green side went to Old Brockleians with hopes high. With Brockleians
choosing to bat first all the bowlers were reasonably tidy, with James Hewitt
again the most economical with 3-46 in 14, though Andy Stuart ran him close
with 2-43 in 12. Andy Cox was expensive, suffering from what some felt was some
overly strict calling of wides from the home umpire which
led to extras being the second highest scorer. They were beaten only by opener
Tony Anderson who batted throughout the innings for 52*, anchoring his side to
a total of 210.
In reply Matt Scanlan (21), Simon Duke
(12) and Andy Cox (23) got off to a sound start, but the middle order fell
away. The lower order resisted well with a succession of scores of 10 ensuring
the usual one batting point was secured, and special mention must go to James Oliver
who made 15 not out and Kieran Poole who made 3.

New Ash Green II v Tonbridge II
Saturday 5th August 2006
Mid-Kent
League Match - 92 Overs
New Ash Green
(19 points) 202-8 (46 overs)
Tonbridge (9 points) 156-8 (46 overs)
New Ash Green lost by 8 wickets.
Despite the organisational difficulties caused by much of the
side being away on tour and the strat of the holiday
season New Ash Green managed to turn out a respectable side, bolstered by Mick
Sumner’s availability for the majority of the match – his late arrival meaning
he was only available for the home game. Tonbridge had also struggled and come
close to raising a side, but had called on a number of senior members and were
putting out a side with several players over, or even well over, 50. The wicket
had not had the ideal preparation with the main pitch mower broken down and
watering not having been done, and it was very hard
and bouncy, though for the most part it behaved fairly well. Tonbridge inserted
New ash green, and opened with the spin of Peter
French, which was accurate and difficult to get away with the sharp bounce. At
the other end Tom Pearce also benefited from the bounce, but he slipped in a
few more loose balls and was more expensive. Matt Bushe
and Matthew Quantrill set out to create a solid base
and did that with a partnership of 57 before Bushe
gave French his only wicket mistiming a pull and being caught at short fine
leg. Quantrill continued to score at the other end
from French, who bowled through his 12 overs for the
excellent figures of 1-13, but Lee Saunders and David Baker were both
disappointing in getting out cheaply. Ben Cooke, making a guest appearance, called
boldly for a second run but was beaten by French’s direct hit from third man
and at 85-4 New ash Green were in danger of throwing
away the good start. Quantrill was joined by Micky Sumner at this point, and together they put on 75
taking runs sensibly from the various increasingly slow bowling on offer. Mike
Wicks grenades were particularly difficult to get away bouncing very steeply on
a good line and length, but when Cyril Davel slipped
in a short leg side one Quantrill was able to put it
over the short boundary for six and bring up the century which had hitherto
eluded him this season. With plenty of time remaining a very big score, both
for the team and for Quantrill looked possible, but
shortly afterwards he was beaten by the bounce from Davey
and edged to the keeper to be out for 109. Sumner accelerated briefly, hitting
his own big 6 over midwicket, but he too was out very soon afterwards for 38
and the rest of the order could do no more than keep the score ticking over to
the end, though they did at least ensure that New Ash Green reached 200 for the
first time in the season.
Micky Sumner opened the bowling in reply and found
the hard bouncy wicket to his liking. He quickly removed the openers to balls
that bounced sharply, and when the number four looked unable to handle him he
was removed from the attack to be held in reserve in case Tonbridge produced
some unexpected batting down the order. Graeme Poole replaced him and also
enjoyed the bounce, producing some excellent balls and being unlucky not to
take a wicket. John Harley bowled through 12 solid overs
taking 3-35 and with Tonbridge showing no sign of having the batting that was
capable of making the required runs New Ash Green had the luxury of being able
to give plenty of people a bowl. Keith Bushell took
1-17 in 8 overs, Joe Elisak
bowled 6 good overs of spin taking 1-18 and Ben Cooke
and Simon Freeman were able to finish off, with Cooke also picking up a wicket
as Tonbridge ended up just making it past 150.
