Offham v New Ash Green
Saturday 18th June 2005

Kent League Match - 100 Overs

New Ash Green (3 points) 169 all out (46.3 overs)
Offham (16 points) 170-3 (36 overs)
New Ash Green lost by 7 wickets.

Yet again hoping for a report from the first XI. Andy Cox finally got going with the bat, making 89, but no one else managed more than 12. 169 was not likely to be enough on Offham’s ground in good weather, and they seem to have knocked off the runs with ease, winning with 7 wickets and 17 overs to spare.

New Ash Green II v Sevenoaks Vine IV
Saturday 18th June 2005

Mid-Kent League Match - 92 Overs

Sevenoaks Vine (20 points) 237-5 (46 overs)
New Ash Green (2 points) 79 all out (25.2 overs)
New Ash Green lost by 158 runs.

It seems to be downhill all the way at the moment. Shorn of yet more regulars, with Dan Walton the latest to be promoted to the first XI, it was always going to be a struggle for New Ash Green. Losing the toss and having to field first on the hottest day of the year so far didn’t help, and having a strong batting side for opposition on the day the outfield was finally becoming quick and the ball was coming onto the bat with some degree of reliability added to the difficulties faced. Only the occasional variable bounce came to the bowlers’ assistance, but Vine were, for the most part, capable of dealing with that. New Ash Green had one early success when Richard Gorman drove Keith Bushell straight to mid on, but this only served to bring in Seb Walker, who played with confidence from very early on. Vine skipper Paul Styles kept him company in putting on 73 for the 2nd wicket, though he did strike one jarring note in a match otherwise played in good spirit when he stole a run when a ball passed back from fielder to bowler went astray. No apology was offered by the skipper, though Walker was very apologetic, and this incident gave New Ash Green one tiny moral victory on the day when they later declined to take a run in a similar situation. Styles was later bowled for 46 in Paul Sumner’s first over, and for a little while New Ash Green looked as if they might get back into the match. Matt Bushe had earned the first go at being fourth bowler with a good performance the previous Sunday and he started off with good consistent line and length, and was rewarded with the wicket of Ireland in his 5th over, at which point he had 1-15. However although he was able to keep his consistency well enough to bowl a full 11 over spell, picking up one more wicket, Vine proved the benefit of wickets in hand by attacking consistently and building up a good score. Walker was dropped on the boundary by Dominic Adolphe, the first ball that Adolphe had asked to be put there as he believed the ball was coming his way, and had an extraordinary let off on 99 when he looped one fairly gently into the air, seeing it drop just a few feet from Dan Lewsey who had lost it in the sun. This miss allowed Walker to complete his hundred, but the very next ball was skyed again, and this time keeper Raj Rajananphan got safely under it to give Paul Sumner a second catch.

238 to win was a big ask, but the batting conditions were still good, the pitch was holding together well and Vine’s bowling did not look as threatening as their batting. Matthew Quantrill and Alan Carter started well, Quantrill picking up a number of fours with gentle clips which raced across the fast outfield, while Carter responded to critics of his slow play last week but heaving a big six into the long grass. At 49-0 in 9 overs the game looked well poised, but disaster struck when Richard Gorman came on first change. Initially he looked innocuous enough, three runs being picked up to take the opening stand to 52 before Carter had a huge swing across the line and was bowled. Things went from bad to worse for New Ash Green, as in his next over Gorman got one to shoot and get Quantrill LBW for 31, and in the blink of an eye 52-0 had become 59-6. There was no coming back from this – Paul Sumner struck an aggressive 17, but all the Sevenoaks bowlers seemed to find ways of taking wickets and no other New Ash Green batsman could get past 2. New Ash Green’s record of not being all out was never in danger of surviving – they were all out with more than 20 overs to go, and there was very little consolation that could be drawn from the game aside from a reasonably spirited performance in the field, with the fielding award for the day going to last minute reserve Andy Oliver on his senior debut.
